In Talsi, a fire in an apartment occurred while the owners were away. According to preliminary information, the fire started due to a hoverboard left charging, and firefighters managed not only to extinguish the flames but also to save a domestic cat.

A fire occurred in one of the apartments of a multi-story building in Talsi. Smoke from the windows was noticed by a passerby, after which the residents called emergency services and began evacuation.

According to neighbors, by the time they went outside, the fire had already damaged the apartment.

“By the time we went outside, a window in the living room had already shattered, and then the smoke poured out,” said resident Zina in an interview with Degpunktā (TV3).

Firefighters forced open the apartment door and entered through the smoke-filled stairwell. The area of the fire was about seven square meters.

During the firefighting, rescuers found a domestic cat in the apartment. The animal was taken outside, after which it received assistance.

“The cat was revived. As far as I know, the paramedics performed resuscitation measures, and everything ended well,” said neighbor Edgars.

After extinguishing the fire, damaged belongings were removed from the apartment. Among them was a hoverboard, which, according to preliminary data, was the cause of the fire.

According to neighbors, the device was charging on the bed when the owners were not home.

“The charger was plugged into the socket, there was no one at home, the hoverboard was charging, and it was left lying on the bed. Most of the belongings were saved, but the apartment will likely require major repairs,” Edgars said.

The family is currently living temporarily elsewhere and is awaiting a decision from the insurance company to begin restoring their home.

Such cases serve as a reminder that battery-operated devices, especially those equipped with lithium-ion batteries, should not be left charging unattended, especially on soft furniture or near flammable materials.
