The State Police has completed the investigation of the criminal case regarding the murder of a man committed in Jurmala last summer. After collecting evidence, the materials have been sent to the prosecutor's office, and compulsory medical measures are proposed for the suspect.
The Criminal Police Department of the Riga Regional Office of the State Police has completed the investigation of one of the most high-profile criminal cases in recent months. This concerns the murder of a man that took place in July 2025 in one of the apartments of a multi-story building in Jurmala.
The investigation began after law enforcement received information about the disappearance of a man born in 1951 on September 12, 2025. It was known that he periodically lived at a certain address in Jurmala.
During the inspection of the apartment, police officers discovered signs indicating a possible serious crime. Upon entering the apartment, the police smelled the odor of a decomposing body, writes tv3.lv. In one of the rooms, they found several bags containing cut parts of a mattress, blankets, a pillow, bed linens, paper napkins, a fragment of human skin, and soft tissues of a human body.
A forensic examination established that the found body parts belonged to the missing man. During the crime scene investigation, a mummified dog wrapped in several blankets and sleeping bags was also discovered in the apartment.
Various items were seized during the search — cutting boards, an axe, knives, a plate, and scissors, on which biological material of the missing man was found. His biological material was also discovered in the seized meat grinder.
The forensic examination confirmed the identity of the deceased.
A woman born in 1982, a relative of the deceased, was detained at the scene on suspicion of committing the crime. She had not previously come to the attention of the police. As part of the pre-trial investigation, the woman was assigned the status of a suspect. A forensic psychiatric examination was also conducted.
Criminal proceedings were initiated under the articles of the Criminal Code providing for liability for murder and desecration of a corpse.
In December 2025, the court ordered the woman to be placed in a specialized medical institution until a final decision was made regarding the application of compulsory medical measures.
According to the police, sufficient evidence was collected during the investigation to transfer the case to the prosecutor's office for further consideration.
On June 3, 2026, the materials of the criminal case were sent to the Prosecutor's Office of the Riga Suburban District. The State Police requests to continue the process with the aim of imposing compulsory medical measures on the suspect.
Now the prosecutor's office and the court will have to make further decisions regarding the case.
