The construction of the largest underwater tunnel in the world continues between Germany and Denmark. The new route across the Baltic Sea will significantly reduce travel time between Scandinavia and Central Europe and is expected to become one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the region.
The construction of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel continues between Germany and Denmark, which, upon completion, will become the longest underwater tunnel in the world built from immersed sections.
The new transport corridor will run along the bottom of the Baltic Sea and connect the Danish island of Lolland with the German island of Fehmarn. The project aims to significantly improve transportation links between Scandinavia and Central Europe, as well as strengthen trade and economic ties between the countries.
After the construction is completed, crossing the Fehmarnbelt strait by car will take only 10 minutes, and by train — about 7 minutes.
The travel time for rail transport between Copenhagen and Hamburg will be particularly reduced: instead of the current five hours, the journey will take about 2.5 hours.
The project is considered one of the largest engineering structures in Europe in recent decades. It is expected that the new tunnel will not only accelerate passenger and freight transport but also become an important element of the European transport network, connecting Northern and Central Europe via a faster and more convenient route.
